As part of Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust, Orchard Place is a Sheltered Workshop based in Redditch. The clients who attend our unit are recovering from, or learning to cope with, a mental illness.
Attending the unit builds confidence, social integration, skill levels and most of all a sense of purpose for those who are in need of a little direction.
There are various work-based activities available, as shown on the web site. These provide a structured, sociable environment for those where employment may not be a realistic option, or a vocational pathway to employment for those who feel more able to return to work. There is a start and finish time, tea breaks, and a lunchtime, when a meal is provided for those who attend a full day.
Training is provided to offer progression from simple repetitive activities to more complicated projects, which could involve weeks of preparation and labour. As well as the projects listed on the web site there is the chance to build on skills in costing, collating, designing, stock control, and using computer programmes.
Because the clients have such varied backgrounds, they are encouraged to share their own skills and knowledge, as well as learning new ones. They make new friends, have opportunities to go on day trips, have meals out and learn new skills.
The staff at the workshop, work in partnership with Community Practice Nurses, Social workers, Doctors and Employment Officers, as well as the clients themselves, making sure the right direction and support is given.
